In this body of work, objects are presented in various states of construction or deconstruction, frozen between two states—whole and fractional. These pieces embody the physical manifestation of the Other, an abstraction of literal otherness, and by turning this idea into an object with which the audience reconciles, the physical, tactile work becomes the subject. By presenting works that embody the notion of ambiguity, a safe space is created in which the viewer has the ability to examine their notions of otherness. The unresolved nature of these works provides a launching point for investigation—what these works are and how they function become their mode of operation. These pieces simultaneously acknowledge and deconstruct the binaries in which they exist while precariously sitting at the center. Continually occupying a grey area, the work aims to create aesthetic arrest through interstitial/hybridized forms, asking the viewer to reconcile the form, function, and overall understanding of object-ness.
