Our environments, current and past, play an integral role in how we define ourselves. We look at what influenced us, how we got where we are, and where we are going. Our notion of I blends into our world as we continually unpack and examine. We critique our institutions, imagine possible futures, and unearth the past. Understanding who we are lays the foundation for this exhibition.
A Bell looks at the ways in which each artist engages with the formation of their identity and the ways in which they create and maintain space. Family photographs and souvenirs let us think about unknowable influences, untaken paths, and the weight of the past; representation and reinterpretation of ourselves and our environment grant us the ability to celebrate and reimagine who we are; critique of systems of oppression and institutions allow us to hold those in power accountable for their willful negligence.
This exhibition features ten artists who examine their position and surroundings in the world to critique, question, and understand. A Bell features Keegan Grandbois, Jamie Ho, Penny Molesso, Rebecca Morgan, Sean P. Morrissey, Zora J Murff, Naomi Nakazato, Breanne Trammel, Joy O. Ude, and Rana Young.
